by jask2002 10. January 2013 21:59

Yesterday Microsoft released a patch MS13-04[KB 2756920] which is causing extensive issues with Web[.Net] related applications.

Windows 2008 R2 RTM customer are mainly affected by this patch. The following exception is thrown after installing KB2756920 on Win7/Win2k8 R2 RTM when any WCF service is hosted on IIS using HTTPS in which the machine has a QFE that only contains System.ServiceModel.dll (S.SM.dll) and not System.ServiceModel.WasHosting.dll (S.SM.WasHosting.dll).

Server Error in ‘/SecurtyTokenServiceApplication’ Application
Method not found:
‘System.String System.ServiceModel.Ativation.iis7helper.extendedprotectiondotlessspnnotenabledthrowhelper(system.object)

Reason:

This issue is due to LDR/GDR DLL versions mis-match issue[System.ServiceModel.dll and System.ServiceModel.WasHosting.dll] similar to MS11-100 issue.

Effected Products:

  • SharePoint 2010
  • Exchange 2010
  • Any .Net Web Application using WCF

What to do:

The workaround is fairly simple. Just need to install one of the latest QFEs that contain both System.ServiceModel.dll and System.ServiceModel.WasHosting.dll.

We recommend to install the following public hotfix: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2637518

  • Download info For Windows 7 and for Windows Server 2008 R2

http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkID=242859&clcid=0x409

Other workaround:

  • Upgrade the machines from Win7/Win2008R2 RTM to SP1.

Or

If you don’t have a choice then uninstalling the patch MS13-004[2756920] would resolve this problem[not recommended approach]
